Hillside Family Medicine recognizes that the busy schedules of active Alaskans require a wide range of options for scheduling appointments. Our office hours reflect this commitment to be there when you need us. It is recommended that you call ahead and schedule an appointment so that we can serve you in a timely manner.
We recommend that women get their routine health maintenance exams with their family doctor. We offer pap smears, breast exams, contraception management, hormone replacement therapy, and advice on how to live a healthy lifestyle.
We offer prostate checks, testicular cancer screening, and evaluation and treatment of erectile dysfunction.
Our services include well-child exams starting with newborns, vaccinations, sports physicals, injury, illness, and parental advice.
Dr. Scott DeBerard is a DO and can perform adjustments as needed.
We partner with employers to reduce workplace injuries and costs by providing high-quality workman's compensation, pre-employment exams, baseline carpal tunnel screening, and medical surveillance. We offer executive physicals, DOT physicals, and FAA (all classes) physicals.
We offer all required and recommended immunizations for foreign travel. We advise you on health and safety for your trip, and provide prescriptions for potential hazards during your travel, if necessary (malaria, altitude sickness, traveler's diarrhea, etc.). Please be sure to bring your immunization record with you if you are seeing us for a travel consult.
Something to consider is that some insurances do not cover travel immunizations and process them as elective. Please call your insurance to verify coverage. For more information on the specific travel immunization billing codes and charges please view the Travel Immunization Form located on the Patient Forms page of our website under Clinic Forms.
Update... As of September 7, 2018 Sanofi Pasteur, the manufacturer of the yellow fever vaccine YF-Vax, announced that YF-Vax for civilian use is expected to be available from the manufacturer again by mid-2019. Sanofi Pasteur applied and received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to make another yellow fever vaccine available in the United States under an investigational new drug (IND) program. Manufactured by Sanofi Pasteur in France, this vaccine, Stamaril, is registered and distributed in more than 70 countries. It is comparable in safety and efficacy to YF-Vax. There are a limited number of clinics throughout the United States that will be able to administer the Stamaril vaccine. Currently, Hillside Family Medicine is the only clinic in the state of Alaska that has been authorized as a Stamaril provider. For more information please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website and the Travel Vaccinations article on the News/Information Page of our website.
For established patients we provide specimen collection (blood, urine, stool, etc.). Your doctor will work with you to determine what labs, if any, you might need. Most of the labs are processed outside the clinic and are available within a few days yet some labs can be completed during your appointment (rapid strep testing, urinalysis, urine pregnancy test, etc.).
If you prefer to get your labs done at another facility, we can provide a lab order for you. Be sure to check with your insurance carrier to see if you have a preferred facility. Following are links to some local facilities:
We can provide diagnostic x-ray services here in the clinic to evaluate a variety of conditions. Your doctor can help you decide if you need an x-ray, and he or she can review it the same day. In most cases a radiologist (an x-ray specialist) will also review your x-ray. If necessary, we can provide an order for a more specialized radiology testing (like a CT scan or MRI) to be done at another facility of your choice.
We offer vision screening, which can be done at your routine annual exam or if you have a specific concern about your vision.
An EKG is a "heart tracing" that can detect a variety of heart diseases.
Spirometry is used in the evaluation of lung complaints, such as cough and shortness of breath.
Your hearing can be tested in clinic, and results are available immediately.
We can provide allergen skin testing or do a blood draw to determine if you have specific allergies.
We provide acne treatment, skin cancer diagnosis and treatment including biopsy, wart treatment, and treatment of skin infections.
We can help evaluate and treat fractures, sprains, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and other orthopedic problems. Osteopathic adjustments are available in clinic. Our in-house x-ray helps you get answers quickly.
We can help with anxiety, depression, insomnia and other mental health issues.
We can provide the tools you need to have the highest chance of quitting tobacco. New prescription medications are available.
We have two procedure rooms and can perform no-scalpel vasectomies, skin biopsies, laceration repairs, skin cancer treatments, and removal of fingernails/toenails.
In general, prescriptions for stable chronic medical conditions are written for 6 months at a time. Refills are designed to expire when you are due for your follow up appointment. You may call the clinic with your refill request, or request a refill through your pharmacy. Requests are processed within 24-48 hours. You will be notified when your refill is approved, but please call your pharmacy prior to leaving home to be sure they have had time to fill it.
Controlled Medicaiton Policy
You must be very clear when requesting an appointment. Please specify exactly what type of appointment you would like and which physician you would prefer. Appointments are generally scheduled to be thirty minutes long for single "uncomplicated" problems. Examples of uncomplicated problems are sinusitis, ear infection, shoulder pain, or hypertension. Patients with multiple problems should request extra time when scheduling their appointments.
In consideration for other patients and the doctor, we require at least a twenty-four hour notice to cancel or reschedule an appointment. Appointment times must be honored.
As a courtesy to our patients, Hillside Family Medicine will bill most U.S. health plans. Your deductible, co-pay and/or coinsurance will be collected in full at the time of service. The amount of payment due at the time of visit depends on your insurance plan. We will also collect on any balance due on your account at that time. Please see our full Financial Policy for additional details.
We do not perform in-patient hospital care or obstetrics. If you should require non-specialist hospitalization, we have contracted with internists at the Alaska Hospitalist Group to admit and care for our in-patients. Upon discharge they return our patients back to us with detailed information regarding the hospitalization and any necessary follow-up care. By calling the clinic after normal business hours, your doctors can be paged. At our earliest opportunity we will assist you in determining the best course of action, whether home care, urgent care, or the emergency room. If you are being evaluated in the Emergency Room and require general admittance to a hospital, ask the physician to page the Alaska Hospitalist doctor on call.
