FAA Regulation Changes

Don’t risk your aviation career, get screened for sleep apnea! FAA regulations are soon to be changing their guidelines for sleep apnea ensuring pilots don’t fall asleep at the controls.

On March 2nd the new guidelines will be issued for any clinical and physical finding based on physician assessment.

One main focus will be on Body Mass Index (BMI) > 35. This focus has become more of a concern with the obesity epidemic in the U.S. and the relation between obesity and sleep apnea. However, the evaluation is based on more than BMI alone. Other risk factors, history, and symptoms will also play a role in the assessment.  If findings are indicative of sleep apnea, individuals will have up to 90 days to complete the treatment process.  Pilots are allowed to fly during this process.

Treatment of sleep apnea can lead to a better quality of life by improving memory, attention span, and problem solving skills. It is also proven to lower blood pressure, decrease blood sugars, and reduce risk for heart disease.

Hillside Family Medicine provides outpatient home sleep studies at the lowest price in Anchorage. Call the clinical staff today to schedule an appointment for you or a loved one.
